I housed a male and a female (from hatchlings) together for over a year. One day, without provocation, he bit deeply into the muscle on her front foreleg. Later, he reached out to grab ahold of her to mate, and bit my hand instead of her neck. I had to thump his nose for at least five minutes to get him to release me.
The only thing I could attribute his behavior change to was hormones. I think their natural instincts are much stronger than we realize, even though the have been raised in captivity.
So sorry about the two females' tails. I don't think the situation will improve much until he decides mating season is over---maybe not even then. I think he is preserving his territory.
