Male tail bitting females....

One of my males has started to tail bite his females. He seems to bite them on the tail tip and then work his way up to mate. But I had to clean-break the two females tails because they were kinked and bleeding. Now I have removed him from their cage. What gives? I have had him with these females for a year.
