Cliff No concensus that I know of...we're just as much in the dark as yourself...Im still trying to figure it out!! Bare with me here Im kinda typing out loud for a bit!!
No doubt that majority of reptiles need Vitamin D3 but in what amount? NO ONE KNOWS!! Snakes, monitors etc...if eating prey animals like chicks, gerbils, mice, rats...get their Vitamin D from their prey (stored in the livers of prey animal) so why do monitors require uvb and snakes don't? Its also the oral vitamin D3 supplements that can cause problems because of toxicity (fat soluble)...since igs get plenty of sunshine or artificial uvb exposure does that mean Vitamin D3 in supplements are stored and can accumulate and become toxic over time...sure...but again how much is too much?? I don't think ANYONE knows.....SOOOOOOO:
For Igs....getting good uvb and therefore Vitamin D3....I wouldn't supplement D3 (not that oral Vitamin D3 is SUBSTITUTE for lack of uvb exposure) just because it can be toxic.....and if it perchance was in the supplement I offered my ig...I would not give a Calcium supplement that contained Vitamin D AND a Multivit that contained Vitamin D. AND if I had my choice about which supplement would have D in it ....it would be the Multi-Vit NOT the Calcium supplement as the multi-vit for an ig is used less frequently (3xs week) as the Calcium would be. I'd also make sure that the Vitamin D content was NO MORE than 400 IUs per tab. Make sense? No??? lolol Maybe Shannon Nelson over at Varanus can explain it better (link below) Sorry Cliff......
