Melissa Kaplan, in all her wisdom and greatness, has the caresheet dating back a couple of years ago. the more time goes by, the more possibilities and combos people discover and add
to the iguana diet. 10 years ago you would hear about giving once a week some dogfood or monkey chow. today, if you do so, you'll be cursed and yelled at! Or people complain that the foods MK describes and reccommends are HATED by their igs. So? Do all iguanas have to have the same taste and likings? Nah! There are sssoooooo many veggies, herbs, fruits on this planet that it's hard to say which single one does the best, and vice-versa.
BUT, even an item that may be considered unhealthy (if used too often) can be actually considered very healthy when scarcely offered.
it's all about balance.
iguanas are the kings and queens of pains in the
@$$ (lol! :), and no matter how lovable they can be, they are demanding brats! they like variety, and variety is what you should give 'em!
MK's diet should be considered as a 'headquarter'
on knowing the basic ig food, BUT, with time and experience you'll find out other great and HEALTHY food items to offer your pet. It doesn't mean MK is wrong or not open enough, she's only human, and knows the "good stuff" from her
llllloooooong experience with iguanas.
Research is the key here, and anyone who has a wild animal for a pet should do PLENTY!
As long as you follow the basics, and if willing, add extras that are still good for the iguana, you're fine. just keep in mind the right calcium:phosphorous ratio, the need of Vit D3, etc.
anything else, just ask!
Ci@o!

: I was just reading the big variety of food people use and some conflict with MK's website?
: I noticed zucchini, broccoli, and carrots were considered terrible by MK. Kale, boy chok, and yellow
: squash should only be used sometimes, not that often. I see everyone is in aqreement with the greens, but
: MK don't suggest putting them in the main salad, just as a side item? She had the salad consisting of grean beans, snap beans, or snow peas!
: An orange veggie(butternut, acorn, or Kaboucha squash, sometimes sweet potato! Small amount of fruit, long list, but grapes were on the list, bannana's won't?
: Something for protein/color--only mentioned a parsnip, if not in season use asparagus? Then protein, consisting of crushed alfalfa(rabbit food) but also mentioned subbing
: a commercial food just so it contained alfalfa and low amounts of other stuff! Mentioned other items that could be added to a basic salad, not subbed, like
: mushrooms, peppers, yellow squashes, etc.... Then suggested putting the leafy greens on the side, not actually mixing them in the salad?
: Is all of MK's suggestions correct? Then why do a lot of people use so many different variations and which is more correct? Thanks.
