In Reply to: Pro's and cons of wire mesh(plastic, metal, whatever) and should you use it? posted by IG27 on February 17, 2000 at 12:55:27:
We only use glass fronts for our enclosures for several reasons. We have had over 40 iguanas come through here within the past 6 months and have seen too many horror stories concerning iguanas and mesh.
When someone adopts an iguana from us we make sure they have a glass front on the enclosure and no mesh (unless it is on the roof to allow the placement of a UV light and fixture) or for ventilation.
Here are a few things to consider:
1. Unless you have a humid room, you will be unable to maintain the ideal humidity level for iguanas - which could negatively impact on proper shedding...
2. Iguanas are prone to nose-rubbing which can leave their nose very raw and open for infection. Too often we have seen iguanas with nose-rub damage that has become infected. We have even had a case which resulted an a pretty nasty abscess from the nose-rubbing on plastic mesh.
3. One of our rescued iguanas injured his leg when he took a tumble of his ledge at his previous owner's house and his nail got caught in the chicken wire on the way down. Thankfully it was not broken, but he did sprain it quite nicely. If the MBD had a chance to progress any further up to that point who knows what would have happened.
I am sure there are other reasons but I cannot think of them off hand. I hope this answers your question!
