: I'm just learning how to care for iguana's and have been doing all the research i can on there diets. I have seen alot of people sugget the MK diet. Now I'm deffinately no expert and I'm not sure I understand the ca/ph ratio completely. From what I can tell igs require a high cal and low ph ratio like 2:1 or 3:1 atleast right? If this is right then it appears MK's diet doesn't meet this criteria. Her diet is as follows:
: 1/2 cup green beans
: 1/2 cup squash
: 1/2 cup alfalfa pellets
: 1 medium parsnip
: 1/4 cup minced fruit
: From what I have found the beans have 1.2:1 ratio
: the squash has a .7:1 ratio (varies depending on the kind of squash) Given the benefit of doubt I'll say Butternut Squash which has a 1.6:1 ratio
: Alfalfa pellets I'm not sure but alfalfa srpoust have about a .4:1 ratio
: and parsnips have a .4:1 ratio
: As far as the fruit I'm not sure what the ratio is but it would have to have atleast 154mg of Cal and 0 ph for the total ratio to be 2:1. Just from these items mentioned I come up with a .8:1 ratio (counting Butternut Squash...with summer squash it only comes to .68:1)
: Maybe I'm doing this wrong. Like I said I'm no expert I'm just trying to go by what I'm finding on the net using as many resources as i can.
: If I'm doing it wrong would somebody try to explain it to me.
: Thanks
: Mark
: P.S. What is the min amount of Cal? From what I have seen it is 400-500mg and this diet only contains 110mg.
Don't even try or if you feel you must make sure you have a good sturdy wall available to bang you're head against. Just kidding. Anyway, I might not be able to answer your question but, I can tell you that I have been feedding my igs a combonation of the Iggyden diet and Melissa Kalplan's salad as a basic for a long time now and have brought back quite a few rescued igs with it. I know that Alphalfa pellets (rabbit chow) or alphalfa tea is way better than alphalfa sprouts as a protein source. I also feed lots of greens and use a calcium suppliment and a multivitamin about 3 times a week. Hope this helps but, if you still interested in all the technical stuff I know that a lot of the members of THE IGUANA MAILING LIST are really knowledgeable on this subject.
