Yes, there seems to be a decline with some local pet stores here (VA) selling iglets. However, our rescue group usually gets calls from people to take their iguanas when they average around 2 years of age (reaching sexual maturity and growing larger than there 10 or 20 gallon aquarium can handle). So, it seems to me that we are seeing animals that were sold 2 years ago. You would not believe the calls we get to take iguanas! It seems like it is endless. If the pet stores all quit selling iglets today, I'm sure it would take years to stop the flow of unwanted iguanas.
Our state NIAD people contacted PETA early enough in 1999 to write a letter to our State Fair Board in asking them to refrain from giving iglets as prizes. Whether it was the letter from PETA or whatever, it worked. In 1998, iglets were handed out as prizes, but in 1999, they were not. For those of you who like to slam PETA, they are not all radical people. The letter (I saw a copy) was wonderful and factual and was "non-threatening". If the letter from PETA is what worked for us, so be it. Believe it or not, the wonderful Humane Society is of little or no help when it comes to ANY reptiles (those vile creatures!).
