In Reply to: Cost of building a cage? posted by Lori on January 11, 2000 at 09:19:11:
On the average, when I build a cage/enclosure the cost is around $ 300 to $ 375 per enclosure. I buy most of the materials at Home Depot. Here is an idea of what they are like ( I am taking progress pics of my new enclosure(s) and will post them when I am done. The enclosure is: double walled insulated walls. Thin plywood or particle board on the outside, paneling or other nice trim on the inside ( unless you plan on painting it or jungle scene wall paper ). Foam insulation ( cheap ). 2 x 2's and 4 x 4's for the framing. Front and back windows ( 45 x 47 or around that size ). Linoleum for the floor ( 1 ft squares work best ). Suspended ceiling for lights and ceramic heaters. Various shelves and ladders. I use a hinged wire mesh framed floor above the linoleum floor for cleaning and putting paper down. A small waterfall assembly ( from pet store ). 1- 250 watt heat lamp, 1 - 250 watt ceramic heating element, 1 - 60 to 100 watt bulb, wiring and ceramic mounts for the above., 36" to 48 inch fluorescent bulb assembly, 1- Reptisum 5.0 UV light, 2 - inline 120v thermosats ( connected to the heating bulb/element ). Plus various hinges for the door and shelf supports. It sounds complicated, but it isn't. You want to regulate heat and light. Thermostats and timers will do that. My latest enclosures will be : 4 ft wide, 24 inch inside width, 7 ft tall. The igs don't stay in there all day, but get to run around when we are home. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. thanks. cw
