yes you can stain the wood ... it's also a good idea to seal all wood surfaces with polyurethane to make it water-proof and easier to clean + disinfect ... since you're doin this in advance, there won't be any problems ... you just need to make sure the stain/sealer is totally dry + aired out before letting the ig near it ... usually takes a few days to a week for all the fumes to be totally gone, longer if the enclosure is sealed up when you paint it ...

ya know, i'd think if the room the enclosure is gonna be in is farily warm itself for your other critters, that the 'heat pocket' thought wouldn't apply *as much* as it would if the room was cooler than that ... as far as solid versus open, compromise + use plexiglass instead of wood on most of it ... it'll make it feel less like a cage while keeping the heat + humidity in ...

UV lights don't need to be across the entire top ... just over the spot where your ig basks ... put a nice shelf underneath them and that should work ...

yes, it all gets confusing ... wait til ya get to the diet part!!! *grin* ... there's not just one "right" way for the most part ... ya gotta read alot, get different peeps different opions and kinda decide what *you* think is best ...

ok ~ i'll go work on getting my pix ready to get scanned ... hehehe
