if his overall health is good, the only reason i can think of for the spikes to fall off, is that they aren't shedding right + are getting too tight to allow blood flow ... (so they dry up + fall off) ... esp, when you say you can see 'a break' in the color ... spikes are often hard-to-shed spots, esp. the biggest ones ... but ... if it's just in one area, it very well could be that he got too close to his heat source ... (eeeeewwww ... check on that before something bad happens!)

sometimes, the bigger spikes will just get bent over ... could be from squeezing into a tight spot or whatever and that could break them off too ...

i don't think a vitamin deficiency would affect *just some* spikes ... more likely would be lack of humidity in his enclosure ... (or squeezing into tight places) ...

being in season shouldn't have any bearing on the health of his spikes/nails ... well, unless maybe his appetite is *way* down and it's caused him to be partially dehydrated ... warm tub soaks will help both ... (iZ bathes with a blue washcloth on his back to soak his spikes ... also keeps him warmer during his soak)

everything i've ever seen says that spikes do not regenerate ...

LOL @ the oxymoron (a "normal" ig)!!!!! *grin*

best wishes,
iZ's mom
