: A few questions:
: When do female igs develope eggs and then lay them? And how old is an ig when they start laying? How long does the whole process take? When is breeding season? I read for captive raised igs it was late winter/early spring, is that true? Sorry for all the questions, and thanks for the help.
A well kept female will usually be large enough to lay her first eggs before her second birthday. She will be around 10" svl, although I know several that lay much smaller than that with no problems.
Usually, a female will lower her food intake about 4-6 weeks before egglaying, and towards the end of her pregnancy may stop eating altogether. The actually egglaying process should be pretty quick. If it takes longer than a day to lay the eggs, something might be wrong, and they might be retaining some eggs. They should lay them all in one sitting.
Here are some past egglaying from my girls:
CYCLURA IGUANA : 4 eggs in about 1 hour
Green Iguana: 16 eggs took 30 min to lay
29 eggs took 45 min
41 eggs took about an hour
62 eggs took 2 hr 15 min.
Remember a healthy female should lay eggs even without a male around. Captive iguanas can lay at any time in the year. IGuanas kept outside 24 hours a day, all year round like a lot of cyclura, tend to lay in the exact same 2 wk period every year.
Hope this helps!
