IZ's MOM...Milk of Mag???? gee whiz..Im just as perplexed as you are. Concerned about the magnesium-calcium balance, supposedly MOM contraindicated in renal impairment pts or where electrolyte imbalances occur. Why is IZ getting Mineral oil again?? Daily?? Frye didn't suggest occasional DSS if needed. Daily laxatives not good because the system gets so used to them.. gut gets to where don;t function without em. Then not only that but malnutrition can be the result as IZ won't get vitamins absorbed because the transit time is so fast...I don't know what to think IZ's MOM...If that's what Dr. Frye suggests I'd go with that...he is the expert in Igs after all.

Thought I'd run this past ya tho..on mineral oil use on Rabbits a husbandry site I use but also have the same info in my nutrition book but for humanz:

Rabbits: Petroleum-based laxatives (Laxatone, Petromalt, mineral oil) do not affect intestinal motility, but may help to slide dry, impacted matter through the intestine more easily when used in conjunction with intestinal motility drugs. Unscented, laxative grade mineral oil is less viscous, and may be more effective. Petroleum-based laxatives should not be given daily or long term, as they can strip the intestine of important, fat-soluble vitamins.(Vitamin D ESPECIALLY!!!!) Note that some very experienced rabbit vets believe that these products are of no use whatsoever in treating GI stasis.

Give 2 hours before or after eating. Encourage hi fiber foods & fluids.

I'd trust that your vets know what they're doing. IZ is doing so much better right? I think your getting sound vet advice, combined with the fact your terrific & diligent and IZ is a fighter! I wouldn't mess with what they tell ya. Any responses from IML?
Gina
