: This lizard will be kept away from bearded dragons
good plan! igs don't appreciate roommates!
: Every single pet store employee I talked to .....
IGNORE EVERYTHING THEY SAY ABOUT EVERYTHING!!!!
: I've also read that Iguanas don't need a basking area as long as their cage is on the higher end of the recommended range. This sounds like bull to me.
yep, that's bull ~ igs need a RANGE of temperatures in their environment ... just keeping it at one constant temp all the time won't get it ... they need a nice warm basking spot, an ambient temp of about 80 degrees and a cooler spot if they desire one ...
: Answer this question: an Iguana out grows a 75 gallon fish tank when he is one half a foot long. i'm an extremist, you may get diff replies ... keep in mind that in the wild igs live in trees ... they like to, want to, NEED TO to be able to climb + be "up" to be happy + feel safe ... also keep in mind that igs can grow at the rate of one inch per month!!! iZ has his own room AND spends a couple hours out of it everyday ...
: How do Iguanas like to be held touched petted?
hmmmm ... this'll vary greatly too ... generally, they like to be "UP" so they like to sit on shoulders or *heads* more than just in your lap ... (problem with them sitting on your head is they think your ears are footholds ~ yeouch! *grin*) iZ likes his head rubbed + his shoulders rubbed ... he also really likes when i put aloe on his 'itchy' spots when he's shedding ...
it's a good idea to kinda 'play with' his toes and tail ... just gently touch them ... this gets them used to it so they don't freak and drop their tail and it makes life easier when you go to trim their claws, cuz they're used to you touching their toes + know it won't hurt ....
: Any other advice?
FIND AN IG-VET right away BEFORE you have problems! the single best way to find one is to look for an iguana surgeon, someone who has done multiple SUCCESSFUL surgeries (no matter what kind) ... ANY one can claim to be knowledgeable about igs when they're really not ... someone who is capable of performing succesful surgery will REALLY KNOW about igs ... no matter where or from who you get your ig, have him/her checked out for parasites immediately ... most igs DO have worms until treated (just like kittens/puppies)
be prepared to spend money ~ on vet bills, on enviromental stuff, be prepared to hunt down proper foods that aren't always easy to find ... be prepared to fall madly in love with your ig + worry yourself sick about every little thing (*grin*)
do LOTS of reading + asking of questions (just like you'e doing!) ... any printed info on igs that's more than 5 yrs old, is most likely useless ...
