In Reply to: looking for info on long-term use of antibiotics (BabyHerp!?!?) posted by iZ's mom on December 10, 1999 at 19:17:18:
IZ's MOM....here I go again...last night I TRIED to post all the info I had...it was a MAGNIFICENT piece of work! lololol Then I lost my connection!! Curses AOL!!I was mortified...so I went to bed instead.....so here I am bright eyed and bushy tailed and although this is no where near as witty, insightful, or magnificent (coffee!!!)as the first...here ya go ... it may not be much help, but I will give it a shot...I didn't know IZ had surgery (why?)...I didn't know IZ had kidney disease(how bad? Wonder if its related/caused by the bacterial infection)..the last I knew he had trouble with his scales...is that why he is on Baytril? How bad is the kidney disease on a scale of 1-10 ...10 being severe? Has the vet recommended allupurinol or low purine diet modifications? Have you checked out this site on Kidney disease (link below)? Have others. What about posting to Melissa on IML pleez don't mention what I post about Maders! [inside joke] Anyhoo...Maders Reptile Medicine & Surgery and Messonniers Common Reptile Diseases and Treatment...are the books I used to look up this stuff :Baytril (enroflaxacin)...is a safe and wide range antibiotic for bacterial infections effective for gram + & gram - strains. Used for 10-14 days IM or oral. IMs must be given deep into the tissue as necrosis and skin discoloration has been observed when given SQ. Baytril is eliminated via the KIDNEYS (hydration +++)....if SEVERE kidney impairment is present the dosage is adjusted to half (the damaged kidney cannot break down the Baytril and to increase the dosage will result in more kidney damage) IF kidney damage is MILD then the dosage of Baytril does not need to be adjusted to be effective. Altho theory....under Hypothiaminosis here's what Mader's says about LONG TERM a/b therapy: suggested that long term a/b treatment may induce thiamine deficiency by decreasing the intestinal microflora responsible for producing Vitamin B1. Long term antibiotic patients may need a thiamine supplement. (wonder if yogurt with live cultures beneficial too) Anyway...this is the jist of what I found under Baytril related to long term usage and kidney disease...hope this is helpful in some way.
