ok, i know i'm on a "Go To The Vet" kick here, but i really think you need to take him in and get some antibiotics ... iZ broke his tail last year, not off, but broke the bone ... (he was almost 5' long at that point) ... the vet gave me oral antibiotics for him AND prescription topical antibiotics to put on the open part ... reptiles heal very slowly cuz they're cold-blooded and so are more suseceptable to infection ... and you want to PREVENT an infection, especially in such a major, traumatic injury as loss of a tail ...
remember igs are good at hiding the fact they're sick and an infection will NOT necessarily be obvious!!!! ... undetected and untreated, it can lead to kidney disease, or a system-wide infection ... trust me when i say, you DON'T want to experience either ... the money spent on a vet visit and antibiotics is well worth it ...
BTW, it's extremely important to keep him warm, fed, hydrated while he's healing!!
best wishes!
