Hi Ed,
The Jamaican Iguana (Cyclura collei) and the Blue Iguana
(Cyclura nubila lewisi) are the two most endangered lizards in the world.
Both number less than 200 in the wild currently and are on the brink of extinction. In fact, the jamaican iguana was thought
to be extinct for many decades before it was "rediscovered" recently. They are listed as CITES (convention on Internationl trade of Endangered Species) appendix I,
the highest level of protection, and also on the ESA (Endangered Species Act) which governs trade and movement within the United States.
The genus cyclura can be a wonderful challenge but is quite expensive and can be illegal to own in certain states/areas,
it is better to leave this genus to people with lots of
experience.
A much better *pet* choice would be the green iguana (Iguana iguana). They can be just as delightful as
pets, are much cheaper and readily available, and are not as big of a commitment.
I would suggest to get a very healthy one, and one that is more on the tame side.
Take care and best of luck in finding the perfect pet!
