Well Tracie...actually they're different...sweet potato is light brownish skin, light orangish flesh....yam is purple(?)skin and dark orangish flesh...If you have the Iguana IML (?) ask Melissa she'll give you the latin names of each type and anything else ya need to know about em. Ive read about them at USDA nutrient database & Litholink.. sweet potato does have a better calcium phosphorus ratio something like 1:1.2 and yams are like 1:3.2.....as far as oxalate content on yams I don't know.....sweet potatoes oxalate content is 56 mg/100gm...high amt. and hard on those kidneys! Anything over 50mg/100gms=3ozs in oxalate content is best avoided so Ive read.Ive never had the desire/need to feed them to my igs...but if given I'd do so occasionally and make sure my igs are getting good water intake to help dilute the oxalate/phosphorus in em! Hope this helps
Gina
