I, too, have a "Houdini" iguana, and he is not the first, either. "Andr'e" watches me when I lock his cage and quickly figured out how to unlock it - from the inside, which meant he had to watch me, then REVERSE the process since he was on a different side that me. He is also able to open a Vari-Kennel dog crate, something none of my dogs have figured out(though I have had some just eat through the sides), though I suppose it does help to have hands! He also knows his name and REALLY knows the sound of a refrigerator door opening! He also knows that a dog on the opposite side of a window cannot actually get to him and hurt him, apparently, so he is free to say all sorts of nasty things about said dog's mamma, but knows that if there is no barrier between them, his butt is on the line, so he minds his manners.
Years ago I had a much smaller ig, "Verdi", who had an automatic hopper-type feeder(like the kind made for rabbits)attached to his cage for his dry iguana food. He learned to unlock the cage almost as soon as I got him, leading me to be more and more creative in an attempt to keep him in. He soon learned, after the cage was actually padlocked, that if he scratched out all of the dry food from the feeder, he could then crawl up through it and escape to the outside. These animals are not stupid by any means!
