Iguana Intelligence

A while back I asked the question to the forum about how smart iguanas are. I got lots of responses, some humerous but did not see that kind of intelligence in my own iguanas. Until I got Buddy. Buddy, a 4 1/2' female, came to me about 3-4 weeks ago. She is EXTREMELY responsive and eats like a PIG. She is an escape artist extrordinaire and that is where her intelligence lies. She used to try to get out of her cage all the time or only at night. She figured out that I would just put her back in.

The other night as I was walking out the door with the dogs, I actually saw her watching me. I close the door, waited and came back in and there she was in the process of escaping.

My son and I went out today to get our flu shot and came home, and yup you guessed it, she was out of the cage. The funny thing is that she is not afraid of the dogs but I have 5 in right now and one of them had her cornered in the bathtub. Sounds bad but she went the whole length of the apartment before getting into the tub. The dog involved is a 14 lb chihuahua mix that sleeps by Buddy's cage every day and whom Buddy actually seems to like. I have found them both on their hind legs gazing into each other's eyes. Buddy had absolutely no marks on her and got out of the tub and went into my bedroom. The dogs follow her and bark at her.

But how smart to wait until I left before attempting escape. That is something my standard poodle does (they are some of the smartest dogs) and to see this intelligence in an iguana was amazing.

When I caught her, Buddy was very good natured about so I hugged her, sang to her, rocked her and put her back into her cage. She was so happy I was holding her she closed her eyes when I talked to her (she actually knows her name).

I am so lucky to have her. She brings such joy to my life.
