I haaaate sand as a substrate. I've seen it used for bearded dragons, but I don't trust it. It could do quite a bit of damage to your iguana's digestion system if he decided to eat some. Also, remember that trip to the beach you took this summer? Remember how much sand is STILL in your beach bag? Chances are, sand will get in the water bowl, the food bowl, etc.
