I too hate that green carpet stuff. Before I built a huge enclosure I used paper towel. Now though I have a 4'w x 3'd x 6'h enclosure and I used vinyl tile on the bottom. It looks great coz I used green marble looking tile and it is soooo easy to clean its unreal. I stopped using bark as a substrate. Even though it looks good. The dust it produces can cause respiratory trouble. I know it sounds like everything is bad for your iggy. Some things are better than others. Try the paper towel, It doesn't look that nice but its a healthier. The same goes for the astro turf and green carpet. Astro turf stuff can be harder to keep clean and their little toesies can get stuck in the loops though.
Hope this helps.
