In Reply to: What do you do when people say you shouldn't have an iguana? posted by j on June 05, 2001 at 02:22:58:
What do I say? I say you’re absolutely right. Whenever I have given a talk at a zoo or a school or even at our iguana booth at a show, the first thing I tell everyone is that they (iguanas) do not make very good pets. That they truly belong in the wild. Though some of us try our best to “keep” them, we really cannot duplicate their natural habitat and/or food. We can only do the best we can.
The next question is why do I have iguanas if this is how I feel. I try to explain that I have never purchased one, but have only taken in someone else’s castoffs. The majority of animal shelters won’t take them, but if they do, most euthanize them. Let’s’ just say that someone needs to stand up for the underdog(s).
Frankly, I hope there comes a day when there is very few iguanas in need (homeless) and that they (stores and reptile shows) quit selling them. It would be so nice to have our iguana rescue group “go out of business”.
In a perfect world, all creatures would be where they ought to be in not in our homes, zoos, etc.
