She made it through the night. I got some pedialyte down her last night and that seemed to help. Her spasms faded to almost nothing and I got her to bed down in a corner of her tank where she would stay cooler as the heat made her spasm worse. Checked on her throughout the night.
When I got up this morning she was up on the lower branch of her tree. Good sign. She wasn't spasming I gave her some pedilyte and turned the day lamps on. Once she started to warm up she started to spasm again. Turned off her heat lamp. Seems like temps below 90 degrees are ok.
She calmed back down but was looking really thin and seemed weak. I decide to give her some Ensure pureed with her green food. Gave her a small 50 cc serving of that. That was 6 hours ago and she has kept it down and has not been spasming with the lower temps.
Took all three lizards to the vet. Since Outback shares her tank he need to be weighed and treated for the worms and coccidia also. Mel was due for a fecal anyways and I was concerned that despite being careful to clean my hands when moving from one lizard to the next I may have transferred something to her. Well she has worms and of all things jaridia (ok I probably totally misspelled that), it is a protozoa thingy that humans normally get from drinking contaminated water (such is drinking water straight from a stream). Anyhoo no idea how she got that, but now I have to look into whether or not I need to get the family tested.
The meds are panacur for the worms for all three, the BDs are getting the Trimethoprim/Sulfa for the coccidia, and Mel is getting Phalgen, flagen, something like that for the protozoa thingy (does that fact that science is not my thing show?).
Talked to the vet somemore about Sydney, she once again looked normal while there, albeit thin. I could tell she wasn't feeling good but then I know how she normally is. He still thinks it is the worm infestion causing the problem. I specifically asked him again about the possibility of a large prey problem and he said no he didn't think so.
I talked to a couple, the Terry's, that live in the area and raise BDs along with other herps, they knew the Doctor I took her to (regular vet is on vaction) and said they were quite familiar with him and he was the vet their vet sends them to when she feels incapable of dealing with one of their exotics problems (they have mammals too, can you keep those as pets?) So I feel better about the doctor. Still think he might be wrong about it not being large prey, but then he didn't see her spasming. Wish he could have seen her last night, she was scaring the crap out of me.
Bottom line is we are still not out of the woods. Doctor says lower temps and ensure slurries for another day or so are probably a good idea. He also said to go ahead and offer her the green food in solid form to see if she would take it. But no crickets until she is feeling better.
I just want to thank everyone for all their concern and support. It is so hard to sit and watch an animal who is ill suffer feeling helpless. I am glad I did not have to do it alone.
YOU GUYS ARE THE BEST!!!!!
I'll continue to keep you guys posted.
Thanks again
Kayo
