I have to disagree with this:
: As far as the diet goes...I'd throw out the parsnips (CA:P ratio 1:2), green beans (phytates & purines) and the strawberries (very high oxalates) better choices out there for your iglet.
: Diet is the most crucial thing while they're babies...can slack off more when they're adults ;o)
: Gina
I believe that all of these items can be used as *part* of a healthy, balanced diet. Parsnips are an excellent source of plant protein. (Remember, there's more to a diet than Ca:P ratio), string beans have recently been brought up as containing too many phylates and purines. But not enough studies have been done to determine how much is too much, here. The arguement against string beans is vague and hazy. My iguanas have been raised with a diet that often contains string beans, and they have nothing but perfect health to show for it. Strawberries do contain quite a bit of oxalic acids, however, they, too can be used occasionally as a treat. Variety is what should be stressed here. Used as a part of a healthy, varied diet, none of these foods are harmful, nor should they be "thrown out" of a diet. All things in moderation, except VARIETY! Good luck.
Best,
Jamie/JBug
