"If you mean the mercury vapor incandescent bulbs, these are 'suntan'
bulbs putting out a fierce flux of UVA and UVB. (These look like light
bulbs but take about two minutes to 'strike' or reach full glow after
switching on. They glow quite blue and sometimes buzz with power.) These
are at least as powerful as the maker claims them to be, the downside
being that they are about twice as powerful as the midday tropical sun
when kept at 12 inches from the iguana. That would be nice, except no
iguana in history has ever lived in a spot that has twice the UVB of
midday tropical sun for 13 hours a day. To say the least - not a good
idea. It's possible to arrange these bulbs to suit reptiles, and some
zoos have done so. However, I don't recommend doing it in a house. No
doubt some folk would find that statement condescending, in which case
I'd like to hope they never get the sunburn I did from one as a kid when
I spent 15 minutes a few feet from one instead of the recommended 12
minutes. It took me two weeks to slough off the dead skin and I looked
like a tomato for four days."
Me? I'll stick with ZooMed 5.0 and summers in the sun. Yikes!
