Spence we all seem to agree that the FIRST thing to do is get another vet's opinion!
The medication that you are using MIGHT NOT be the right one for the infection causing the abscess. The vet can culture it to determine which antibiotic it should be on....especially ask for this if the first vet didn't do it.
In my opinion, amputation should be the last course of action. Normally, abscesses are treated on the outside with antibiotic ointment AND from within with oral antibiotics. Some are harder to get rid of than others. But your first step should be another vet's opinion.
