When I was looking to get Lightning's tail fixed I called the mobil vet here in town because I had heard good things about her and thought it might be nice to save a trip across town. In speaking with her, she told me that she was in the process of moving in to a new home and wouldn't be doing any exams or surgeries for a week to 10 days. SHE TOLD ME not to wait on this and to get something done asap if I thought it was dry gangrene. I knew she wasn't fooling around 'cos that was a good "chunk of change" she was losing by telling me to get to a vet and not wait for her.
Guess I'm also saying that MOST herp vets take this as a thing that needs to be dealt with promptly. I can understand the "wait and see" attitude because she had that dry tip for 4 years before anything happened with it....but I'm not sure that that was true dry gangrene. I'm assuming when it fell off back then it left the door open for infection and gangrene....and when the situation was right "wham" it came on in.
