I HATE when that happens! :o( Okay, the second vet....how do they propose to remove this piece? The vet that did our ig's DID put her under in order to do it. I saw them put the mask on her and everything and told her nighty-night :o) I could pull the bill and tell you exactly what I was charged for if you like. The bill, however, included a fecal and a blood panel so it was higher than just for the amp. There were 2 charges regarding anesthesia (sp?), the surgery itself, the Baytril injection and then the Baytril that came home to us. We waited in the reception area while the surgery was done and were able to take her home after she was functionally awake and bleeding had stopped. Our vet is clear across town from us and it was more time/gas economical to just wait for her. This was also pre-arranged knowing going in that surgery was what we were looking in all probability so our appointment was set up on a day where he could just go right on to the OR with her after exam if needed.
If the gangrene is moving on up that tail...you've got a GREAT chance that blood poisoning will set in and that kills. I can't say what could happen with your iguana; I can say what happened with ours. Once she got that nasty business cut off her tail, she was a happy camper! No more hissing, snapping and tail whipping if you just looked at her LOL
I was advised by others of this forum that her tail should not be sutured....to do so could cause the tail to not be able to re-generate. I was also told by others here that she should be put on antibiotics to guard against secondary infections. What a pleasure to hear these same words coming from our vet LOL I just nodded knowingly while he 'splained all this to me :o)
We were told to not even touch the stump end by our vet. She wasn't to get it wet or dirty for 10 days. The injection and oral meds would heal it without having to put any topical meds on it. This has been true also.
Talk to the second vet and ask what procedure he would use and if he'd use anesthetic. If you have questions, come back and we'll talk and others with experience in this can give advice, too. Truly, it's not the loss of a bit of tail that I worry about...it's the blood poisoning aspect.
