Hello All,
I've been sitting here reading all of emails and posts about the Nina issue and I would like to just make a few comments.
First off, (these are just HD's opinions) if anyone who wants to rescue iguanas and try to place them, there are a number of things that a person needs to plan out first. Here's a list:
* Rescue group income/donations
* Rescue members/volunteers/foster parents
* Amount of available space for housing and a set limit to the
number of iguanas that the rescue group will take in
* Contacts with other groups for additional help in placing
rescued iguanas
* KNOW YOUR TRUE LIMITS
Our group, iguanaFIRST, has right now a total of three members. Could we handle 20 iguanas......I would highly doubt it. Could we place 20 iguanas in a week, chances are we'd find homes/foster parents for maybe half of them. I've place a few iguanas that I didn't even see and they weren't even in my state. I don't like the idea of shipping iguanas if I don't have to, but sometimes you have to do something you can't get around. If there was a need to place 10 to 20 iguanas in a few days, shipping would have to fall into the picture regardless of my own personnel beliefs.
I believe our group knows their limits and we know we can't save every iguana in our state. I'm thankful there is more rescue groups in VA.. I can't stress enough.......KNOW YOUR LIMITS.
One last thing, I will not donate money unless I know it is a truly good cause. Example: If we had to place 4 iguanas within a week and are asking for help to cover shipping cost. First off, I would post the overall cost of shipping and also list contacts of where they are being shipped to, so anyone interested in donating money could contact the recieving end to verify that the transaction is really taking place.
Right now we are filing for the non-profit and are hoping that we can get donations to cover medical bills/supplies in the future. Any donations would be logged and then a statement sent back to the person donating, so he/she can see where their money went for.
In closing, I hope Nina gets the real picture and does the right thing and doesn't let the opportunity fall between the cracks to place these iguanas. Then in the future don't get in a situation like she is now.
