Dear Iggy friends,
I went on Melissa Kaplan's website the other night to see if I could find some more variety for Meggy's meals and boy, how depressing! I discovered that I still am not feeding her totally correctly. Have never made Iguana salad, and have been feeding her a lot of collard (didn't realize about the oxalates).
Anyhow, I decided to made the salad so I went to a pet store and the only rabbit pellets I could find list dehydrated alfalfa meal as the main ingredient, but also contain tons of other things like ground yellow corn, ground oats, soybean meal, ground barley, wheat red dog (?), linseed meal, died whey, and the list goes on and on ad nauseum! They didn't just have alfalfa rabbit pellets. Anyone ever find just plain alfalfa pellets anywhere? I did find dried alfalfa cubes which I tore into little pieces and added to the salad and she was a riot--wolfed down the salad but spit out the alfalfa! Anyhow, the salad took me about 90 minutes to make with a food processor (6 recipes). She is eating it pretty well. Also added escarol to her diet along with the collards. I eliminated parsley--had no idea it was so high in oxalates. It was recommended in a book I have along with dog food, egg whites, and small stones!
Melissa certainly covers everything well but is there a website that gives the proper diet in a condensed form so I don't have to read 20 pages! What else do you give your iguanas for greens. Have you ever given rapini?
Give all your "babies" a lip rub from Meggy and me!
Judy
