: : : OK....I bought my ig a few months ago as a hatchling. I have a homemade cage. Wood and wire. 3 foot long 4 foot tall and 2 feet deep. Its 2 levels. I started noticing it to spend less time basking and more time hanging from the top of the enclosure. I looked on the edge of the cage (wood) and there had to be hundreds of these very small brown, black, grey, and red bugs. So small you could hardly make out what they are. I don't know what they are? So I took the cage and washed it down.....bleached it. In the igs holding tank there were more of these bugs. I guess they are in him or on him. What hppen? why are these devils on him? help please! I have no vets near to ask for help and the pet stores don't know thing. Anything I can do?

: : Dunno much about Iguanas, but I have dealt with a mite or two.

: : Plain, old white vineger works. Wash the cage full strength, let it sit a while, then wash with water until the smell is mostly gone. If the cage is wood, do it a couple of times to get in all of the tiny irregularities. Wash the animal with a DILUTE solution, 1/4 vinegar, to be on the safe side, and with a very young animal cut it thinner, being careful around mouth and eyes. Your animal will NOT like this.
: : Works for snakes. Also works on, ahem, body lice, which is where I got the idea. Doesn't seem to discourage ticks, though.
: : Cage mites are a bummer.

: PS: once you have at last gotten rid of the little buggers, finish the cage. Seal all of the joins, any non-toxic sealer that paint will stick to will work. Seal the wood and paint it with a safe, non-toxic finish. This will make it easier to clean and a re-infestation will be easier to deal with. Be sure you cover ALL of the joins, inside and out, and cracks in the wood. Do this before you re-introduce the Iguana. Then any survivors of the Nuke Treatment will be sealed in like illegal gold in a Swiss bank.

Terrarium type set ups for a reptile are most attractive, but seem to draw parasites like a magnite. Strongly reccomend against it. I doubt if anyone on this forum has live plants in the enclousure (our Iguana inhaled all of my daughters gerainums), but pay attention to the substrait. Here is where all this fuss and bother seems to start and stay.
