Hi filthy and welcome to the forum,
I also say loose the eggs. My ig Sneakers is just under 2ft. She does the same thing yours does. You go in to get her and she postures and trys to tail whip. Twice recently I've been biten. When she has bitten or tail whipped she gets exactly more of what she didn't want in the first place. More of me. LOL I make sure I hold her and touch her gently all over while talking to her. This last week she has finally resigned to getting on my hand and being nice.
Try not to pick him up from above. This is what predators do and it scares your ig. Just put your hand out (fingers together) and move it as close to your ig as he is comfortable with. Stay there and talk to him. As he relaxes, move a little closer very slowly. Never go away while he is being bad, only after he is good for a little bit do you go away. Do this several times a day. You will get to the point where your hand is under his chest and he won't move away. Resist the urge to immediately pick him up. Keep doing this, eventually you will be able to put your hand all the way underneath him and pick him up. Just take it very slowly and always end the session on a good note.
