I know the exact leashes you are talking about. However all is not lost. I actually purchased that rope around thing and have converted it. The metal thing that you put the rope through, dump it. Go down to the sewing store and ask them for a springy button thingy that you put on the end of jacket cords. They should even have some that come in plastic (light weight). This should cost around $0.25 to a $1.00. You might even want to bring your rope with you to make sure that it fits. Now put the rope through the springy thing and form a loop. Put this over the head of Linus and bring it down past the belly but just before the hind legs. Adjust the loop snug but not tight. Linus might do some crocodile rolls while getting used to it but it should work.
Another thing, never pull back on the rope if Linus is making a break for it. Just hold the end of the rope tight and work your way up to him.
