Hi Carrie,

I am so sorry for your loss. You have my heart felt sympathies.

I saw your post and regret not responding but did not understand the urgency of it. After rereading it I understood it was an ongoing problem. My only suggestion might have been to make sure the he was getting 10-12 hours of at least 85 temps. The digestive and immune system begins to slow/shut down below that.

Another issue is that Igs raised on poor diets frequently expire around the 5th or 6th year due to renal/kidney failure or loss of liver functions.

In any case it was doubtful that anything could have been done. Herps in general take quite some time to become ill and an equally long time to make them well again. This is due to the decreased metabolism of reptiles as well as the lack of knowledge in treating them. There is also an undefined line that once crossed, in most cases, prevents a recovery. This increases the importance of identifying and treating ailments early.

Most of us here work very hard to insure the well being of the creatures we have chosen to keep. We spend countless hours trying to make all the right decisions, cleaning, feeding, building cages, sunning, and much more. Nevertheless, the fact is we do sometimes fail after doing everything we know to do. I do believe that when it comes to herps many animals that would be lost in the wild at an early age live a much longer life due to our care in captivity. We can, however, only overcome so much, try as we might. Guilt is a common emotion when we lose a loved one. Don't feel any. Be consoled by the fact that you did the best you could and provided the care you did.

I hope that you will share the results of the necropsy with us so that others might benefit from whatever may have been wrong. Don't even consider leaving the forum/chats because you have lost your Ig. You are more than welcome to participate and I implore you to continue doing so.

You have my deepest condolences and I will look forward to continuing to see you on the forum and in chat. Iguana03
