Didn't want you to think I didn't see this :o)

I got to pondering on something tho. If calcium carbonate is derived from limestone AND if cuttlebone is derived from the "degenerated internal shell of lime" of a cuttlefish....THEN...could this be a possible reason why reptiles LICK AND EAT some rocks???? Could it be because there is limestone in them or they are limestone rocks? Here where I am there is heavy, heavy limestone layers...there is very little natural topsoil. In most yards you can dig down only maybe 3 inches before you hit limestone. And of course with natural erosion of topsoil there are areas of a person's yard where the limestone is right at the surface. Which is why I wondered when ours stop outback and are seemingly licking at dirt...maybe they are actually licking a boulder of limestone. All of us in this area have pebbles to boulders just under the surface. 2 streets behind our house is an old limestone quarry :o) It was filled in and made into a lake with a park around it.

Upon further pondering I found that calcium carbonate can/is used in a number of products and wondered if this is why some of our reptiles seem sooo attracted to some of them. Partial list:

Pipe, gutter, tile, electric wire, vinyl sheet, automobile parts, toys, film, garbage bag, glue, electric cable, tires, rubber glue, paint, art paper, high quality paper, medium quality paper, rice paper, WALL BOARD (thought of Des & Marie) and so on.

More information on this can be found at the website (but of course!) that I'll leave. It is based on usage of calcium carbonate in a Japanese factory. Really interesting what all they use this product for IMHO.

But to your initial wondering of protein in bone...I haven't come up with anything either. If I do, I'll let you know :o)

Happy reading everyone!
