I'm not a vet....but I am able to speak from hindsight which is, as they say, 20/20. The very tip of our female ig's tail was black & dry from the day we brought her home as a baby FIVE YEARS ago. Didn't think much about it; didn't have computer access; etc. Then last year at the age of 4 she had to be spayed. When she got home she was really hyper-sensitive for quite some time. About a month or two after she'd been home something spooked her and she REALLY whacked her tail out. Surprise, surprise the tip of her tail dropped off...about inch to inch and a half. By then we were on line *grin*
We decided to keep an eye on it after a few days of putting neo sporin on it. It didn't start to re-generate but neither did it get any different looking.
Now here we are almost a full year later....and I SWEAR it seems like overnight the end of her tail looked odd. Couldn't really tell if it was just shed not coming off well or what....so I mist it really really good for a week and a half. Then get up one morning and see it and think "hmmm, it looks like the dry area has moved up the tail" Husband agreed that something was going on with it. One day it seemed only an inch was involved and within 10 days it looked like 2 inches.
Went to the vet and she had to have about 6 inches removed to get rid of all the "bad" area. And no mistake about it, it was moving steadily up her tail and was making her sick.
This is why I urge you to find a good herp vet. I really, truly felt since the bad spot on Lightning's tail had fallen off on its own last year that we didn't need to worry any more. I was very wrong and wish now that we had taken her in and let them dock it back an inch....instead of the 6 she lost last week to this.
Hopefully, you will be able to find someone nearby! Come back and keep us posted. We like new faces around here :o)
