Jamie....according to my clincial nutrition book Oyster Shell IS NOT pure calcium carbonate.....it contains a high amount of animal protein and toxic minerals inc. lead...states that 80% of oyster shell calcium is cal. carbonate. Just thought I'd throw this wrench in the works..don't know the total animal protein percentage in it nor do I know the lead content. Even Centrum has "trace" amount of lead...so suppose it can't be that bad...A new anti-toxics law passed here in Cali...Proposition 65 effective April of this year that only supplements containing 1.5 micrograms of lead per 1,000 mg of calcium can be sold in this state. Highest in Lead content related to oyster shell products being banned include:
Vita-Smart Natural Oyster Shell(sold by Kmart stores), CVS Natural Oyster Shell, Your Life Natural Oyster Shell. Supposedly they are being re-formulated to conform to the stricter anti-toxic laws. Thought this was interesting to pass along
