Tail Amputation Done Deal but ?

Posted by Iguanamomma on July 17, 1999 at 01:00:11:

Took Lightning in to vet this (Fri) morning because I didn't like the looks of the end of her tail & thought I was looking at dry gangrene.

Yeppers, dry gangrene. Dr. amputated about 5 inches off into good area. No stitches. Gave Baytril injection. I'm to give oral Baytril (10%) once a day for 7 days then every other day for 5 more days. I'm to do nothing at all to the tail except water it off if it gets dirty.

Lightning is a 5 y/o spayed (98) female. They pulled a blood sample from her and are running a full panel on her. Blood wk. last yr. showed elevated calcium but she was gravid so that's expected. They did not run another afterward.

The dr. said that the panel will show whether or not there is something else going on causing her tail to have a problem. He DID NOT say what this might be though. He said that if the blood was okay that he may want to do an x-ray to look for any calcification of bones. He said that he didn't "like the way she looks."

What else could cause the dry gangrene besides an injury or a bad shed type situation?

I would add that since her amputation this a.m. her attitude has improved 100%! The yellowish skin tones that I'd been seeing the last 2 weeks are fading to more of her olive color. Tonight was the first time in over a month that I've been able to reach in and just pet on her as I do the male without her hissing and snapping at me. Obviously, she had been in pain from this tail problem. :(

If anyone has a clue as to what else could be going on, I'd like to hear it. Ya'll keep my Lightning in your prayers and/or thoughts that this too shall pass.

Thanks!
Glenda (stay tuned for a diet question...don't say I didn't warn you!)
