Sounds about right to me,,is he losing weight in the base of his tail? That's when you really have to worry,it's stored up fat that they use and the jowls are a last resort store of fat too.If he looks a little lean in the body,you're still not in any danger but I would do as Skinny suggested and get a fecal done on him asap.
