Hi Mike,
Yes many hybrids do have at least some blue, some more than others. Some look deceptively like pure lewisi. There was one hybrid female at the captive breeding facility on Grand Cayman ("Lucy") that I would not have known
she was a hybrid at all, if I did not check the information on her cage tag.
Her mate was said to be just as blue in color (even though he was also a hybrid), but unfortunately, "bernard" as he was known died only a week before I came to the facility.
I would suggest talking to
Dave Blair about it more.Call him at (760)746-5422 My personal feeling is his LP clutch tends to be more blue than the others. But you may also be happy with a baby from his LE clutch, those parents are more prolific than the LP and
the babies have more potential to become very big size wise, if that is important to you. FYI pure blood lewisi are not nearly as prolific as the hybrids, unfortunately.
Dave has many separate blue hybrid bloodlines so you should pick a baby from parents that you like, which really is a subjective thing.
All of his babies are in top condition unless he explicitly tells you otherwise, no flaws with missing fingers or missing tail, etc.
The LP clutch parents create beautiful babies, the problem being that they had only one baby last year (fall 98), and that particular baby (female)
was not very tame. There will be more babies hatching in the fall. They will be sexed by wintertime so you can pick the sex you prefer.
My blue hybrid "Sapphire" is a female baby from the LP clutch.
Dave is a wonderful guy and will help you with many questions.
A few months ago we had a discussion where Dave felt the babies with lighter stripes
tend to be the ones that have more lewisi
(and thus will have more blue color when they mature).
I definitely think this is true, as all the pure lewisi I saw on Grand Cayman had very light stripes. Some had almost nonexistant
stripes, even from a very early age of 8 months. In contrast, pure caymanesis (Cayman Brac iguanas) and Cubans (both which have been hybrid with lewisi) have very dark pronounced stripes.
Of course these are just general suggestions, there is no guarantee as to how a baby will look like when they grow up.
I say this because I do not want you to be disappointed in any way.
I actually waited *three years* to find my perfect match! I had been checking out Dave's animals every year since I first met him in 1994....
PS. I have many photos of pure lewisi and hybrids, and of caymanesis taken on their native islands. You can see some of the differences etc. if you want some of these pictures, email me.Cost is Approx $16 including shipping
where $10 of it will go directly to the National Trust to help the blue iguana (I have been volunteering for them in this last year).
