In Reply to: How often do you feed your iguana? posted by j on May 28, 2001 at 14:26:17:
::: "I once read in a book called The Green Iguana Manual that iguanas over 4 years of age don't need to be fed everyday, but like every other day."
Wow! My iguanas (a male and a female, both 3 years-old) would have a fit if I didn't feed them everyday!
They are both great eaters, and they usually eat up to THREE times a DAY. I feed them when I get up, (biggest meal of the day) then again, a bit more in the afternoon, and then once more in the early evening. (This time, it's more like a before-bedtime snack.)
They both have a bowl of food out at all times of the day, as well as fresh water. I spritz the food with a clean (new) water bottle several times a day, to help keep it moist and fresh. They seem to like to "graze" all day long. I think it sounds like outdated information to only feed an ig every other day. In the wild, I highly doubt they are on that strict of a schedule. They probably graze at will, varying the amount they eat by need, mood, and possibly temperature.
I'm glad you asked this question--as there may be others out there who also have bad info.
Stick around, and feel free to ask any other questions you may have. Our goal here is to have healthy, happy iguanas, as well as healthy, happy iguana owners!
