Well, it sounds like you're moving in the right direction now. We use and recommend the indoor/outdoor carpeting. I don't think I would use peat moss, any wood chips or shavings. Igs tend to flick their tongues to "taste" everything and you run the risk of him eating this stuff and then your talking BIG problems! Use newpapers if you must. Harry came to us really dark brown when we first brought him home. He had been kept in the upper shelf of an unheated (and no lights) closet for who knows how long. After he "thawed" out a bit, he lighten to a lighter shade of brown. Also, if we take Harry or Lola (who is green) out in the sun, they both darken up quite a bit. Did you have your's out in the sun? Good luck with his recovery. Your both in our thoughts.
