First off... i was attacked first.
which is to be expected I am the new guy..and my opinion is different than the majority here.
I run a forum about a different topic and i always see the new guy is the first one to get nailed... especially on different ways of thinking.
As far as legeslation... there is alot.
CITES has placed the green iguana as an appendix II species. for those of you who dont know CITES is the Convention of International Trade of Endangered Species.
CITES regulates the amount of any living thing that is exported or imported provided it is already on CITES.
CITES is made up of member countries. almost every country is a CITES member nation.
But again just like i have said all along it is about money. Just like the name says "international trade". And as long as igs are farmed they will probably never reach appendix I which is what is needed to stop their importation/exportation. Any country can put a non-CITES animal on appendix III status without a CITES vote. all countries that i know of that export CITES animals set quotas. a limited amount per year that can be shipped.
and again... this wont be popular but eventually
the US may end the importation of all reptiles.
and here is what will happen to your friend the iguana then.
2 countries farm them. when they can no longer sell them to the US they will decrease the amount they produce. that means less money for the exporter and the government of those countries.
so now to increase their revenues they have to cut down more trees... by the way those two countries already suffer from deforestation and alot of mamal species have already declined in numbers and some have even dissapeared (from el salvador..crested eagles, jaguar, and others).
So since the jaguars werent as important as money and the crested eagles werent either... do you think they will say "save the igs save the igs" ... of course not. So to have it your way...
no one should breed igs here cause there are too many already and after the import ban there will be no more except a few older igs here and there..
then the countries that export them will kill of the rest and now they will make it to CITES appendix I and will have full global protection.
Although there numbers will be limited to those seen in zoos and special habitat areas in their native countries... Oh and lets not forget now there will be Iguana poachers hunting them in these habitat areas because they are a natural food source there. it has happened with the gorillas... and lots and lots of other animals... believe it it will happen to the iguana when there importation stops.
you guys need to understand I am not BSing you people... this is how it works.
