The simple fact is that these heat rocks are being marketed to unknowing consumers. Pet stores get a lot of information from the packaging of the items they sell. If you have ever been into a pet store and had any contact what-so-ever with a pet store employee, you would clearly understand that! These hot rocks are advertised as being completely safe for green iguanas. These unknowing pet store employees see that, and they jump at the chance for an easy sell to those people, without ever once thinking about informing them the dangers of heat rocks (which they are probably completely unaware of anyway!) So the issue is a very simple matter of ZooMed taking the responsibility of informing the consumer and the retailer of the dangers of these so called safe heat rocks! Yes, CHE's and basking lights are dangerous as well, but at least when the CHE and basking light is mounted, there is at very good chance that they will not be too close to the iguana. Besides, the CHE's have warnings on them as to the danger of the high heat they emit. Heat rocks are sold to those who don't know, and they are placed exactly where they will do damage...in an area that any iguana will most definitely use it! It was my understanding that we, as iguana owners, should provide our pets with a habitat as close to the natural habitat of a wild iguana. I'm no expert, I admit, but I'm pretty sure that I've never heard of iguanas laying around in the rainforests on hot rocks for warmth. A properly placed CHE is the closest thing we can possibly provide to replicate the natural warm climate that our iguanas should be living in. Wake up people! They have built a better mouse trap...throw the old ones away!
