OK look it seems that you have no problem buying/keeping igs but you dont want them brought into the country. doesnt make to much sense but ok thats your opinion. You know... you need to realize that the reptile business IS a business.
and as unfortunate as it is there are losses.
Believe me no one wants them. The exporter doesnt want loses because he needs to feed his family. the importer doesnt want loses cause believe me its no fun to throw a few thousand dollars away.
the pet store although generally not the smartest guys in the world dont want loses either.
so now hopefully we have established that none of us want to lose our money.
believe it or not and any of you should call USFW and ask any of the agents that clear live reptile shipments about the condition of farmed iguanas.
They are exceptional. iguanas in the two countries that are known to farm them are seen by those countries as valuable natural resources. they quota the exportation to keep the price up they do watch the exporters to make sure quality is high also.
Now, there are wild caught igs that get imported from Suriname and Guyana,,, avoid them like the plague. no farming there.. and the igs show it.
fortunatly not many are imported as they have to pay collectors to climb trees to catch them and if you have ever tried to catch a 3ft ig in a tree you know it aint easy. before you start screaming at me... believe me I do not agree with the importation of non-farmed igs.
The mark up on igs if you import them is about 25 cents so it doesnt take a genius to figure out that if you cant get them healthy and keep them healthy you will quickly be eating ramen noodles for dinner for the rest of your life.
Most do die in pet shops and peoples homes.
but it is us the ones who buy them as pets that have turned them into the goldfish of the reptile trade. most pet shops see them as an acceptable loss and so do most owners. But... it is also there demand that is making sure that there will never be a lack of igs.... because as long as you want them as pets the countries that export them will keep
farming them. cause when demand goes away for them
those countries will look to other resources to sell like their trees or their land for hotels, and habitat destruction will kill alot more igs than any pet shop.
