The box turtle may try to eat rocks, if it has a calium problem. Buy a cuttle bone that he can bite on. Also boxie will need to be soaked in tepid water in the tub once or twice a day. Usually boxies CAN'T swim put only one to two inches of water in the tub. This does depend on the type of boxie. There are a couple of aquatic breeds of boxies. One of their favorite foods is earthworms and slugs. Also meal worms, crikets, super worms & pill bugs. If he is young, he will be more interested in creepy crawlies then fruit & veggies. Some can be enticed into eating strawberries & cantelope. If he will eat one of these you can sprinkle vitamins & calium on them.
He does require humidity or will suffer from eye, ear & respitory problems. The abcess will need to be looked at by a vet. Boxies are prone to abcesses under improper care.
Cage temperatures should be about 70-75 degrees. Will want a hide box, and is extremely unhappy in a small cage.
I provided a link to box turtle care below. Also you can post questions on the box turtle forum here at kingsnake.
