1. annectens and affinis do naturally intergrade. I have personally seen more than a few in the field.
2. Hybridization occurs at the specie level and above, not the sub specie level.
3. An intergrade can be natural (overlaping ranges) or un-natural (man made), but it is still an intergrade, NOT a hybrid.
The gophers look like a combination of the two, with varing degrees of visual likeness of each sub. I'll look in the archives for some pics, and post them later.
