My first snake was a Nerodia sipedon sipedon. I went over to the dock where he was basking, and picked him up. This was a very foolish thing to do, I was ten years old, and for all I knew, it could have been a Crotalid (I later found out that there are no venomoids in my area) and he wasted no time in whipping around and tagging my wrist. I was bleeding like crazy, but I was as happy as can be. I don't know how that particular experience got me hooked on herps, but it did. I still will always love Nerodia though, great snakes.
