I have tried to teach my son about all kinds of wildlife and conservation since he was old enough to understand. He can identify just about all the native snakes of Kentucky.
I know it is hard for people who have been raised to hate snakes to change their minds. My father in law was that way when I first met him. He now calls me when he sees a snake on his property. He is well into his 50's and cant tell the difference between a hognose and a copperhead! He was just raised with the notion that all snakes are bad, period.
I am glad that my son is into wildlife and conservation, I guess it starts early in life.

:Good for you. Good for your son. Too bad about your neighbor kid. Such a complicated thing, hatred for the serpent. Embroiled in religion and ignorance, our conquering of nature and all. Heck, we can't stand each other (jews vs arabs US vs Commies you get the idea), surprise that we have love for any other species! We cringe at the idea of feeding a cute little kitten to our beloved snake, but think its fine for a "rattlesnake roundup" (gotta get them dangerous snakes!). To everything there is a season. Remember the history books tell us about the Black Plague? No snakes to blame there!
