Hey Martha,
I used to live in Raleigh and in all my years of being in the woods and fields I never saw one. I would try maybe going out a little further like Garner or something and trudging through some big fields. My dad lives there and has seen black rats, green snakes, and a few others. He is pretty close to where they are building that new mall off of 40. I would say anywhere outside of town though that isnt being bulldozed and built on at the present time would be a good start.
